Navigating the Hormonal Rollercoaster: Understanding Perimenopause Symptoms to Take Charge of Your Health

Here I'll go beyond the same regurgitated bought and paid-for "facts" you can find on the first 10 pages of any search engine. The ones that point you squarely in the direction of HRT for which Big-Harma ultimately profits for their temporary bandaid solution. If you're looking for HRT advice, you'll enjoy those results a lot more than what I have to provide here.


If you decide to stick around I'm going to take you on a journey that millions have made before you, to reclaiming their power and health, not just around perimenopause symptoms, but with a vast array of chronic conditions and unexplained "mystery illnesses". Lets dive in!

Navigating perimenopause is easier when you know the why's and how-to's

I was experiencing many of the symptoms I'll touch on here today, but when they started I had never heard of the term perimenopause, until I saw it making its trendy debut via social media. Much like you're doing now, I took my time to look into and research and what all the hullabaloo was about. Having chosen the natural route, I began religiously following a "trendy" perimenopause-designed "hormone-balancing" diet for a year. I learnt a lot along the way, but ultimately watched my symptoms worsen by the month. I also knew there had to be a better, less complex way than alternating between intermittent fasting, 36-hour fasting, counting macros, watching my cycle to know if I could eat potatoes or a banana, or if it was time to eat keto and load up on good fats instead. It must have looked completely bonkers to my poor family, especially considering I was still a nightmare with anxiety, irritability, and the whole 9 yards. But the newly swollen Thyroid that was choking me in my sleep, was the catalyst for finding another way. There was no way I was going to spend another decade of my life chasing my tail in and out of appointments, being gaslit and offered substandard solutions, from a system based on bought and paid research again.


This was the reason I'd mostly broken up with Western medicine in the first place. In my early 20s, I'd suffered for years from endometriosis, being told it was all in my head for a while, before finally finding a doctor whose long-term solution was for me to hit the chop shop (surgery) yearly it would seem, as it returned within 6 months of the first one. Back then which is 25 years ago now, I was blessed to find a homeopath who had helped me heal from endometriosis and inadvertently sinus and chronic childhood asthma as well, through diet and some supplementation.


Not knowing anything about herbalism, or what had truly moved the needle on my healing all those years ago, I wasn't sure where to begin, but I knew it was possible. So again I went searching for another natural solution Thankfully, I didn't have to wait long or look too far; my swollen thyroid made me realise I potentially already had the solution on my bookshelf, with Thyroid Healing and Liver Rescue books collecting dust unread, but more on this as we continue.


The Not-so-Fun House


Ahhhh, the pre-menopausal carnival known as Perimenopause, like a hormonal fiesta before the grand finale of menopause. Picture this: your reproductive hormones are packing their bags and leaving the party, finally!!! But alas they seem to be causing all sorts of havoc, as the door hits them on the way out.


Anything goes from hot flashes to night sweats, insomnia to anxiety, it's a real blast! Thankfully with a bit of knowledge and a proactive approach to your health, you might just change your mind about this seemingly nutsy cuckoo time. Say goodbye to feeling like a hot mess and hello to embracing your inner powerhouse!


So, what's the deal with perimenopause, huh?


Perimenopause is like the pre-game show before menopause hits the stage. It's when your body starts getting ready to retire your monthly visitor for good. Picture your ovaries slowly but surely saying, "Adios, estrogen!" which doesn't have to, but can often lead to a whole not-so-fun house of surprises.


What appears to be perimenopause signs and symptoms, usually begin to be felt around a woman's 40s, but now many women are experiencing issues as early as mid-30s. Which should beg the question, what is really going on with women's health? With cases of infertility, endometriosis and PCOS rising by the day, it shouldn't take rocket science to connect the dots between a toxically saturated environment and problems in the subjects trying to live there. Thankfully, slowly but surely, it is beginning to be understood in mass consciousness that endocrine-disrupting chemicals and then some are simply not good for anyone who knew, right?


Perimenopause we're told can last anywhere from a quick sprint of a few months to a marathon of several years – the average being touted as four years. Although the wild ride of "perimenopause hormonal" symptoms seems like a bit of a nightmare, by decoding the signs, embracing new understandings, and sprinkling a large dose of self-care magic, you can cruise through this phase like a champion. So, let's embrace the cues, understand our body like never before and strut through this midlife adventure with the sass and confidence that comes from education and knowledge in action!


Perimenopause Signs: The Wild Roller Coaster Ride!


So, you've entered the thrilling world of perimenopause signs and symptoms! This could result in a diverse range of symptoms that will keep you on your toes or for some, nothing at all. From irregular menstrual cycles to hot flashes, night sweats, sleep disturbances, mood swings, and even some unexpected vaginal dryness - it's a party you might wish you weren't invited to!


  • Irregular menstrual cycles are commonly experienced during this time, showing up fashionably late, sometimes too early, and with a flow that's as unpredictable as the weather. However, our ovaries are not the sole contributor to the hormonal game, with other organs (if not overburdened) also giving their 2 cents worth as things begin to wind down.


  • Cue the human volcano! Hot flashes are like an unexpected ride through a sauna. Picture this: flushed skin, sweat galore, and a heart-racing like it's in a marathon. And let's not forget about night sweats, the sneaky hot flashes that crash the sleepover party. They're the ultimate sleep disruptors, turning beauty sleep into a sweaty mess and leaving you more tired than a sloth on a Monday morning. Why are they worse at night you might ask? According to the Medical Medium series by Anthony Williams, if our livers are overburdened during this phase, they will not only struggle to perform their usual nightly functions but also easily become overtaxed as the strain of adrenal fatigue sends more work the livers way.


  • Next the mood swings that can make you go from happy to grumpy in seconds, plus irritability that might have you snapping at everyone around you. And let's not forget about the brain fog and anxiety that can suddenly hit you like a ton of bricks! We tend to blame the hormonal fluctuations again for messing with our brain chemistry creating insomnia and more.

    But as explained in Medical Medium Brain Saver, our brains are a lot more complex than we can ever really imagine. A vast network of complex communication cables (if you will) passing information at lightning speed from one point to another. When we have difficulty transmitting or receiving that information, it's a lot more than hormones creating the issues and a lot more to do with what the brain is dealing with in terms of lack, such as nutrition or abundance of unhelpful substances, like toxic heavy metals. Cracking the Code of Perimenopause


During this time of seeming lawless chaos, there are some additional top health worries, that "professionals" will remind you of as part of the "talk". As if you weren't worried enough, cue the apparent sneaky sneak-in of cardiovascular disease, high cholesterol, blood pressure, bone density issues and inflammation levels, paving the way for heart issues. Rather than thinking logically about the true causes behind these issues, such as trendy diets, non-heart-healthy foods, chemically extracted seed oils, chronic dehydration, what other minerals bones are also made of (spoiler, it's not calcium alone) and what causes chronic inflammation, we can start to worry it might be the beginning of the end. Thankfully it's not!


You might be told to not worry and instead just keep those check-ups on the calendar and keep an eye on your heart health to stay ahead of the game during this transitional phase! Which is great advice, but it never truly addresses the problem of lack of education. If we never fully understand or address the true causes of these issues, we'll continue to give our power away to people who "know". The same people who say "we should drink red wine one week, then not, then don't eat eggs this week, oops forget that eat eggs, you need protein". This will always leave us at the mercy of whoever paid for the study and their agenda, without ever knowing the whys.


Perimenopause can be your Ally


I now treat perimenopause as my ally; it gave me great impetus to look at my health on an even deeper level than I usually do, reminding me that I truly have to look after myself because no one else is having the unique experience that only I can have. It also gave me answers to multiple other health issues that I had been living with after doctors and natural therapists gave up on treating me in any other way, other than arthritis medication.


If you're like me and are hoping to never join the pill box organiser gang too (not that there's anything wrong with that), then you're possibly already covering the basics of well-being as I was - walking, nutritious meals, time relaxing and time with loved ones. But if you're in a state of deep suffering, even the basics can seem impossible, and I understand that. Not wanting to drag oneself from pillar to post when barely functioning is not a sign of laziness or non-discipline, it can be a sign our body is screaming for help. If the basics are out of reach at the moment, don't despair you will surprise yourself one day as you begin to heal and regain your strength and vitality.


Starting small with self-education was key to my healing. I began by reading the two Medical Medium books that I had on my shelf, I later sourced others from my local library. I read cover to cover, started with a few suggestions per day and was pleasantly surprised by how much less difficult it had been than my "trendy" perimenopause diet over the previous year. Welcome to my Perimenopause Perspective! 

​This site was born out of necessity when my health took an early 40's nose dive and I felt like I was losing my mind (literally the brain fog was taking over). Having previously healed ​other health conditions naturally and maintaining a fairly healthy lifestyle, its fair to say I was caught completely off guard. 

​​​Looking around on social media I began to see women ​my age, doing the rounds, in and out of doctors offices, attributing this to "perimenopause", menopause's lesser known crazy little sister​, apparently. ​

​And so the research began, as a desperate attempt to find natural solutions to what was fast becoming a long list of symptoms! However, I soon realised ​there wasn't a lot of information available, beyond the bought and paid for studies and when consulting with a local naturopath recommended a battery of "inadequate" thyroid tests just to get the ball rolling, I decided to look into what I already had available rather than repeat my prior experiences spending a lot of time and money being gaslit by a broken system.

​Instead I busted out the Medical Medium Books​ on my shelf that were collecting dust unread, as I'd taken​ them as a barter payment ​m​any moons ago for some admin work. I spent the entire weekend devouring the two books I had, uncovering a whole new level of information ​t​hat not only made perfect sense for the first time in 25 years, but unbeknownst to me, was already a global movement of thousands healing from multiple chronic health conditions.

To cut a very long story a little shorter, within 4 days my thyroid was no longer swollen I stopped ​snoring and choking​ in my sleep. I was finally able to breathe without using asthma ​​medications. Within 9 days my brain fog was gone, back pain alleviated, I was sleeping - no more insomnia, anxiety was relieved, heart palpitations were gone and I could see I wasn't going to be sentenced to a half-life anymore.
